you know... i'm rlly happy that i discovered neocities. i never used geocities before, but i did use piczo during the late 2000s & that was such a wonderful time. i slowly forgot about the platform over time & eventually it disappeared. neocities reminds me of those times, however somehow it also doesn't. i don't rlly know how 2 describe this feeling.
neocities gives me hope that the old internet isn't dying, but is it really good 2 hold onto the past? bc we all know that not EVERYTHING was better back then. i enjoy visiting neocities pages, although sometimes it starts feeling bittersweet and at the end of the day i still feel empty. you often find beautiful neocities pages that feel old & then you realize they are actually brand new. they only look old.
there is often not only old stuff on neocities, but also modern things, which isn't a bad thing at all. but sometimes it reminds me that i'm still living in the present & not in the past. sometimes it's about fandoms that came long after my time. you see users who are even much younger than me, but they still manage 2 create authentic retro websites.
it's nice seeing younger people become interested in older things. cause i also feel drawn 2 a lot of retro online stuff that i didn't even grow up with. i was born in the late 90s, so i mostly experienced things from the 2000s & early 2010s. but it makes me wonder: is it still about nostalgia, or is it only about aesthetics? for me, it can sometimes be fake nostalgia, or the feeling that i missed out on something. i guess i do both.
it doesn't really matter why people like these things. i still enjoy talking with people about retro stuff, no matter what their reasons are. but sometimes you still wish people could understand your feelings & experiences. so what do i actually mean by "emptiness"? like i said before, it's really hard 2 describe. maybe i thought: "okay, i'll become like my old self again and update my page regularly like i did back on piczo." but so far... it hasn't really happened. everything is moving slowly & because of that i sometimes feel empty again. maybe i'm also afraid that i won't reach many people like i did back then.
even tho the internet used to be smaller, i still got guestbook entries or exchanged links with other pages. maybe it's not only about the old internet itself... cuz if i visit an old website where there is little happening, or nothing at all anymore, it wouldn't make me happy either. those pages would probably make me feel empty too. the reason why i still feel empty is because even tho i discovered many neocities pages, i sometimes catch myself doom scrolling when a page isn't what i expected it to be. and that's kind of ironic... because i wanted 2 escape social media.
ofc, i still prefer neocities over many other platforms. it's just kinda sad that i still often end up feeling empty. i don't want 2 give up on neocities. i just hope that one day i'll feel more passionate about it again. it doesn't have 2 feel exactly like it did back then. all that matters is having fun. ♡
